Day 48: What Art Does Not Do
Art
does
not
solve
the
problem.
Art presents the question
and from the question comes response.
If the response is ANGER, the problem grows.
If the response is NEGLECT, the problem festers.
If the response is DIALOGUE, the problem is exposed
and becomes opportunity
for discussion
for understanding
for healing
for progress
for empathy
for knowledge
for peace.

Yes, art needs to ask questions. Any questions. Which is why I have some problems with the “scaffold” controversy at the sculpture garden. I can see the offensive nature of the work. Bit I can also see thst it asked us to examine some important questipns. Are there questions art can’t ask? Or ways that it shouldn’t ask then?
This is a great comment, Jim. Personally, I don’t think there are questions that art CAN’T ask, but I do think there are audiences that AREN’T ready. I think growth comes when viewers can step back and articulate WHY they feel/think/fear/cheer without feeling attacked or demeaned. Perhaps what’s lacking from both the art and the beholder is the courtesy given to their differing perspectives. Courtesy should not equal censorship, but freedom of expression need not equal attack.
